Why is my skin itchy?

If your skin is itching, it can significantly affect your quality of life. It stops you sleeping; it affects your ability to work; it affects your relationships; it affects your mood. Ultimately you feel miserable and you need help.

Stopping your itching can sometimes be a challenge for any doctor.

By working with a Consultant Dermatologist, we can help you to find out whether there is a treatable cause for your itching.

Sometimes itching is caused by a problem internally, for example due to your thyroid gland, your liver, kidneys or iron levels. Rarely, it can be a sign that you have an underlying cancer. Your doctor will work with you to check for these possibilities. You may require some investigations to look for underlying causes.

Sometimes you have a skin disorder which is causing the itching. Examples are eczema, psoriasis, lichen planus or urticaria. These can be diagnosed and treated to help the itching.

Occasionally you may have a skin infestation such as scabies which requires specific treatment. There are hallmark features which might suggest this which your Dermatologist will look for.

Sometimes itching can be due to the skin ageing and losing its previous oils. This can be difficult to treat, but your Dermatologist can use their expert knowledge to improve and reduce these symptoms.
